Manipulation Under Anesthesia

ELANCO is pleased to offer Manipulation Under Anesthesia (MUA) again!

What is MUA?

Manipulation Under Anesthesia (MUA) is multidisciplinary manual therapy treatment for patients with chronic pain that have not responded to traditional approaches. It is non-invasive, nonsurgical, and very effective. The procedure is used to improve articular and soft tissue movement using specifically controlled release, myofascial manipulation, and mobilization techniques while the patient is under moderate to deep IV sedation using monitorized anesthesia care (MAC).

This procedure is used by specially trained chiropractors and orthopedic surgeons as a means of breaking up scar tissue around a joint that does not have complete range of motion. Patients with herniated discs, post-surgical patients, and patients with hardware, frozen shoulders, any fibrotic or tight areas, and/or areas with scarring or adhesions can be considered for this procedure.

A letter from Dr. Gary Greve about MUA:

"I am privileged to announce that I have been given the opportunity to work with Berks Surgery Center, partnering with a team of medical doctors and anesthesia doctors. I am again able to offer a high-level service to chronic and difficult cases called manipulation under anesthesia or MUA. I have participated in hundreds of these procedures with great success. The orthopedic doctor from the previous surgery facility retired, and Berks Surgery Center has stepped in to fill the need, and recently received their credentialing.

MUA is a wonderful procedure, covered by most insurance. It is non-invasive, non-surgical, and very effective. Please if you know anyone with pain that has not responded to traditional approaches and perhaps has had numerous failed procedures; send them to ELANCO for a consultation. Herniated discs, post-surgical patients, patients with hardware, frozen shoulders, and any patient with fibrotic and tight areas, patients with areas of scarring or adhesions inside, can be considered for this procedure. I am excited for the community that this treatment has become available once again as an alternative to drugs, injections, and surgery.

As with any procedure under anesthesia there are risks that have to do with eating before the anesthesia. Medical clearance is always obtained. The adjusting under anesthesia requires less force than when the patient is conscious, as there is no muscle splinting. Also, know that patient selection and the skill of the attending physicians play into the results. Every patient and doctor team is different. What I can say is that this should be considered on a case-by-case basis prior to injections and surgery."
